Sociology and Gender Studies
The study of gender and society has been at the center of my academic interests since I started in Hutchins in 2017. In the display below, on the left you will see an essay that I wrote only two months into Hutchins; the writing and subject matter is perfunctory, but my passion for studying women's and gender studies started with LIBS 101. On the right you will see a historical literature review that I completed three years later for the Sociology Department here at SSU. The literature review was a culmination of my sociology and gender studies curriculum, in which I compiled existing research on the division of paid and unpaid labor in lesbian relationships. These two pieces show the progress that I have made throughout my time in Hutchins, but also display how I have been able to delve into the areas of study that I was most passionate about.
LIBS 101: The Human Enigma
This essay titled, "Where did All the Women Go" discusses the underrepresentation of women as artists, and the overrepresentation of women as art themselves. Women are often objectified as the subject of art, but not respected as an artist themselves; in addition, art forms that are traditionally feminine like needlework, pottery, and more, are not as respected as male-dominated fields of art.
SOCI 312: Sociology of Gender
This literature review compiles existing research in the fields of sociology and women's and gender studies in order to present a comprehensive look at how women in lesbian relationships divide paid and unpaid labor. While many heterosexual relationships have been found to enact traditional male breadwinner and female homemaker roles, lesbian relationships have been observed to be more egalitarian in nature.
